Show Racism the Red Card Activation Event

Show Racism the Red Card Activation Event

NUST are proud to share an update on a powerful matchday activation delivered at our recent fixture against AFC Bournemouth, from Show Racism the Red Card.

The activation centred around the First 11 exhibition, celebrating the first 11 Black players to represent Newcastle United at senior level. This heritage project recognises the trailblazers who broke barriers at the club and highlights how diversity has always been central to the success of football and wider society.

Ahead of kick-off a striking Wor Flags display filled the Gallowgate End, paying tribute to these pioneers and creating a powerful visual moment for supporters across the stadium.

There was also a pop-up exhibition in the Milburn Stand reception which gave fans the opportunity to learn more about each player’s story, reflect on their contributions, and engage with the wider anti-racism message behind the campaign.

We’re particularly proud that NUST played a key role in supporting this work. We successfully secured £2,500 in funding to help deliver both the matchday activation and a follow-up educational day with local school children, taking place on 8th May. This session will build on the themes of the exhibition using football as a platform to educate young people about racism, inclusion, and the importance of challenging discrimination.

The project itself forms part of a wider effort to use football as a vehicle for social education, ensuring that the stories of those who faced and overcame racism continue to inspire future generations.

We were also honoured to welcome Andrew Cole as our invited guest. As one of the players featured in the “First 11”, Andrew attended the match, took part in the celebrations, and spoke at half time about his time at the club and the values of hard work, resilience, and belief that shaped his career.  His presence brought real meaning to the occasion and underlined the importance of recognising those who paved the way.

Finally, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Newcastle United for their support in delivering this project. Their collaboration, alongside partners including Wor Flags, has been vital in ensuring both the matchday activation and the upcoming educational work could take place.

We look forward to updating you further following the school engagement day in May.
