Sunday the 7th of July welcomed the second Pav Cup football match between Newcastle Legends & Dunston FC.
We won’t dwell on the scoreline too much (8-2 to Dunston) as it wasn’t about the scoreline, it was about family, friends and football fans, young and old.
After a murky grey sky in the morning, glorious beaming sunshine lit up the afternoon. The pitch looked in tip top condition and the fans waited to get a glimpse of their heroes from a bygone day.
For many, this was the only chance that some parents had to share the experience of seeing some ex-Toon players have a kick around on a pitch with their children, and reminisce about happier times.
Before kick-off we all shared a minute silence for the great Pavel Srníček and you could have heard a pin drop followed by a great roar and cheer from the waiting spectators.
NUST had the honour of holding the ‘Pav is a Geordie’ flag (centre circle) during the minute silence and were there with a banner to meet supporters. We talked through what we are hoping to achieve in the future and intend to listen to the concerns that the supporters have.
A huge thank to Geordie Signs (geordies-signs.co.uk) for supplying the £1 membership banner and to Newcastle Legends (@NCLE_Legends) for allowing the Trust to join in with the day to celebrate a truly great goalkeeper.
